Trump Announces Neil Gorsuch as His Pick for SCOTUS Justice

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday night that he is nominating Judge Neil Gorsuch, 49, to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant after the sudden death of Justice Antonin Scalia.

Gorsuch, who hails from Colorado, has served on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals since 2006. He is lauded as a conservative intellectual, much like Justice Scalia. According to Politico, he was educated at Harvard Law alongside President Obama. He then went on to clerk for two Supreme Court justices and serve in the Department of Justice.

Perhaps his best known cases include two Obamacare challenges: Hobby Lobby Stores v. Sebelius, a challenge to the contraception coverage mandate, and Little Sisters of the Poor v. Burwell, a challenge to the same mandate. In both cases, he took the side of the religious-based organizations.

Independent Journal Review’s Benny Johnson reported early Tuesday afternoon that two sources close to President Trump confirmed Gorsuch’s selection. Another potential pick, Judge Thomas M. Hardiman, was reportedly summoned to Washington, D.C. for Tuesday’s reveal.
