On this week’s episode of the Bigger Picture, Stephen Perkins tells the story of Nellie Bly, an investigative journalist who displayed the curiosity and dedication required of reporters by faking insanity to study an asylum in New York City.
During the ten day stay on Blackwell’s Island in 1887, Bly wrote a daring exposé titled “Ten Days in a Mad-House” that told of the horrors faced by the patients. Her reports would lead to an investigation by grand jury and the allocation of additional funds for the facility.
